Tiny tim king for a day8/18/2023 ![]() ![]() The exclusive access to Tiny Tim’s intense diaries, the playful and powerful animations and the interviews with his family and friends, makes this film not only a captivating portrait of one of the oddest stars the world has ever seen, but also a psychological drama, examining the borderline between insanity and geniality. There were plans and hopes that Tiny Tim would be a lasting star, not only a novelty act but one man ruined these plans: Tiny Tim. His wedding on the Carson Show was watched by over 45 million Americans and his queer personality have been celebrated by the likes of Bob Dylan, Marilyn Manson and Lady Gaga. Considered a freak by many of his peers, Tiny Tim left no one unaffected. An outcast from a young age, Herbert Khary’s rise to stardom as Tiny Tim is the ultimate fairytale. Narrated by Weird Al Yankovic, TINY TIM: KING FOR A DAY is a biographical doc about a musician who is not only well known for hits such as Tip Toe Through The Tulips but for his trail blazing personae that paved the way for other rock stars such as David Bowie, Prince, Iggy Pop and Boy George. I’d also like just one more hit single.” - Tiny Tim, Playboy 1970 But most of all, I’d love to see Christ come back to crush the spirit of hate and make men put down their guns. Far from the sort of mainstream heartthrob on movie screens at the time, he was nevertheless a talented musician who chose to embrace his oddities and peculiarities in order to create a memorable, entertaining persona.“My greatest unfulfilled ambition is to be one of the astronauts or even the first singer on the Moon. Apparently always the consummate performer, Tiny Tim was always “on” when he needed to be, relishing fame and attention so much that, even if he was the butt of the joke, all that mattered was that he was in the room. He became a regular on “The Tonight Show,” even going so far as to get married on the show, a spectacle in every sense of the word. An appearance on “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in” in 1968 catapulted the falsetto-voiced ukulele player to national fame, the public fascinated by his odd persona and unique musical style. A largely self-taught musician, he began learning to play the guitar at as early as six years old.įor someone who wasn’t around during Tiny Tim’s heyday, the most surprising part of von Sydow’s documentary is just what a large part of the zeitgeist the performer was for quite a few years running. It’s certainly understandable that young Khaury, like so many before and after him, turned to his music for refuge from a rocky family life and an uncertain future. The family struggled to get by, and his parents didn’t always appreciate Khaury’s eccentricities or talents more than once, Yankovic reads out Khaury’s own account of being thrown out of the house or being confronted by an angry, abusive father. “Weird Al” Yankovic narrates King for a Day, reading from Khaury’s personal journals, which he kept as a young man processing his rollercoaster family life as the child of immigrant parents, a Jewish mother and Catholic father. At just about 80 minutes, there isn’t much to this biographical documentary, but there is more than enough to honor this quirky performer’s legacy and lasting impact on American pop culture. Singer Tiny Tim is the subject of the documentary, 'Tiny Tim: King for a Day.' Photo courtesy of Juno Films April 1 (UPI) - Juno Films released a trailer for the documentary Tiny Tim. The story about the outcast, Herbert Khaurys rise to stardom as Tiny Tim, is the ultimate. The enticing documentary Tiny Tim: King for a Day captures the delightful insanity of how Tiny Tim, the kind of elfin novelty act you could imagine getting booed off the stage at an open-mic. In Johan von Sydow’s Tiny Tim: King for a Day, Khaury’s life, work and notoriety is chronicled through archival footage, interviews with surviving friends and relations (Khaury died in 1996) and stark black and white animations that bring to light the trauma and tragedy the musician used his art and fame to escape from. If the name Herbert Butros Khaury doesn’t ring a bell, fear not: the Manhattan-born musician popular in the 1960s and ’70s was better known by his stage name, Tiny Tim.

Causs of unequal pupil size8/18/2023 ![]() The oculomotor nerve innervates 4 extraocular muscles (superior rectus, medial rectus, inferior rectus, and inferior oblique), the sphincter pupillae muscle, the ciliary muscle, and the levator palpebrae muscle. Oculomotor (third) nerve palsy varies in presentation and etiology. Adie's pupil may involve an orbital process, while bilateral cases may indicate systemic processes. Ninety percent of cases occur in women between the ages of 20-40 years, 80% of cases are unilateral, and 70% of cases are associated with decreased deep tendon reflexes (Adie’s syndrome). Aberrant reinnervation and upregulation of postsynaptic receptors lead to the clinical presentation of a tonically dilated pupil with reaction to near stimulation but poor reaction to light. Further pharmacologic work-up (see diagnostic procedures) is useful in confirming Horner’s and historically was used to localize the lesion.Īdie’s tonic pupil results from damage to the parasympathetic ciliary ganglion or short ciliary nerves that innervate the sphincter pupillae and ciliary muscle. Postganglionic or third-order neuron lesions include carotid artery dissection, cavernous sinus lesion, otitis media, and head or neck trauma. Preganglionic or second-order neuron lesions may be caused by a Pancoast tumor, mediastinal or thyroid mass, cervical rib, neck trauma, or surgery. Central or first-order lesions are often caused by stroke (may present as lateral medullary syndrome) or demyelinating disease. Anisocoria is greater in the dark due to a defect in the pupillary dilator response secondary to lesions along the sympathetic trunk. Horner’s syndrome (oculosympathetic palsy) is classically described by the triad of ptosis, miosis, and anhidrosis, although clinical presentations may vary. Prostaglandins, opioids, and organophosphate insecticides can constrict pupils as well. Sympathomimetics, such as adrenaline, clonidine, and phenylephrine, cause mydriasis through their actions at ɑ-1 receptors of the pupillary dilator muscle. The use of pilocarpine, a non-selective muscarinic receptor agonist in the parasympathetic nervous system, may result in a small and poorly reactive pupil. Scopolamine patches, glycopyrrolate antiperspirants, nasal vasoconstrictors, herbals such as Jimson weed, blue nightshade, and Angel’s trumpet can dilate pupils. Anticholinergics such as atropine, homatropine, tropicamide, scopolamine, and cyclopentolate lead to mydriasis and cycloplegia by inhibiting parasympathetic M3 receptors of the pupillary sphincter and ciliary muscles. Pharmacologic anisocoria can present as mydriasis or miosis following administration of agents that act on the pupillary dilator or sphincter muscles. Causes include physical injury from ocular trauma or surgery, inflammatory conditions such as uveitis, angle closure glaucoma leading to iris occlusion of the trabecular meshwork, or intraocular tumors causing physical distortion of the iris. Mechanical anisocoria results from damage to the iris or its supporting structures. ![]() Examples include aniridia, coloboma, and ectopic pupil. Physiologic anisocoria may be intermittent, persistent, or even self-resolving.Ĭongenital anomalies in the structure of the iris may contribute to abnormal pupillary sizes and shapes that present in childhood. Light and near responses are intact, and the degree of anisocoria is typically equal in light and dark. The exact cause is unknown, but it is thought to be due to transient asymmetric supranuclear inhibition of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus that controls the pupillary sphincter. It is a benign condition with a difference in pupil size of less than or equal to 1 mm. Physiologic (also known as simple or essential) anisocoria is the most common cause of unequal pupil sizes, affecting up to 20% of the population. An injury or lesion in either pathway may result in changes in pupil size. Generally, anisocoria is caused by impaired dilation (a sympathetic response) or impaired constriction (a parasympathetic response) of pupils. Thus, thorough clinical evaluation is important for appropriate diagnosis and management of the underlying cause. ![]() It is relatively common, and causes vary from benign physiologic anisocoria to potentially life-threatening emergencies. © 2019 Neuro-ophthalmology Virtual Education Library: NOVEL Īnisocoria indicates unequal pupil sizes. Edwin neal interview8/18/2023 In Hansen’s stead, Bill Johnson (who previously worked with half the TCM cast in 1985’s Future-Kill ) stepped in to hide his visage. In turn, Hansen politely declined the part. Unsurprisingly, though, the actor was only offered scale pay plus 10% as a salary. However, due to the financial debacle of the original film when it came to salaries, Hansen understandably wanted a significant increase in pay as a sort of restitution for his monetary losses from the first Massacre. Considering the tonal shift of this sequel, it’s no surprise that only one cast member from the 1974 original returned to the fray: Jim Siedow (1920–2003) as “The Cook” - renamed as Drayton Sawyer, the head of the cobbled-together cannibalistic Sawyer family.Īlong with Siedow, the original Leatherface himself, Gunnar Hansen (1947–2015), was offered the opportunity to reprise his role. Carson continued to pound away at the screenplay while all this was going on.Ĭasting for the film commenced around this same time. Thus, with no one else to take the helm, Hooper assumed the reins once again - and, really, he’s the only guy who could make a sequel like the one in review. For better or worse, though, up-and-coming filmmakers considered this follow-up to be a career killer. Meanwhile, Texas shooting locations were scouted while Hooper began interviewing potential directors for the sequel. As fate would have it, the ranger arrives just in time to help local radio DJ Vanita ‘Stretch’ Brock ( Caroline Williams ), who recently became the Sawyers’ target. Although it took him over a decade, he has finally tracked the cannibalistic barbecue cookers and killers, now known as The Sawyers. Partain ) a mere thirteen years prior, Texas Ranger Lieutenant ‘Lefty’ Enright ( Dennis Hopper ) has come out of the woodwork seeking vengeance. Following the deaths of his niece, Sally ( Marilyn Burns ), and Franklin ( Paul A. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is a tale of revenge and BBQ, just like any other good story. Mind you, that’s less than most films get for any phase of production.Īs a result, Carson began writing the screenplay as fast as possible. As part of the deal, the sequel would go into production in May for an August 22nd release. In this one, they’ll be killing yuppies !” Not thinking about the more profound commentary or tone in this notion, the studio approved the story on the spot. Thus, the pair pitched Cannon Films with the following: “ I n the first one, the family was killing hippies. The screenwriter immediately cottoned to the idea of writing something fun and subversive. ![]() Undeterred, Hooper then presented the notion of Chainsaw 2 to the acclaimed screenwriter of Paris, Texas (1984) - and a native of The Lone Star State - L.M. While I feel Henkel’s idea would’ve been a hoot, Cannon Films ultimately rejected it, at which time Henkel chose to exit the project. The intent was to parody Motel Hell (1980), which itself was a satire of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. As luck would have it, Henkel had an idea for a sequel that involved a whole Texas town filled with cannibals. Logically, the first person Hooper approached about the sequel was Chain Saw co-creator, Kim Henkel (who would later return to this series with his opus, 1994’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation ). It was an approach that would fly better in the 1980s than any other decade as horror was booming in all its subgenres. On the contrary, he wanted to take things in a more fantastical and comedic direction. By this point, the original TCM had garnered a reputation as a true horror classic, and Hooper knew darn well that it would be unwise to rehash that first film. ![]() Thus, Hooper had only intended to be a producer and co-writer on the sequel. Luckily, this obligation to make a sequel could still be met, even without Hooper in the director’s chair … or so he thought. As part of this deal, the indie distributor required one of Hooper’s projects be a sequel to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). That opinion changed, though, when he signed a three-picture deal with the king of the schlockmeisters, Cannon Films (1967-1994). More than anyone, though, the original movie’s director and co-writer, Tobe Hooper (1943–2017), considered a follow-up unnecessary. Heck, I feel the same way as the fans sometimes, considering how bad some of the sequels in this series have been ( the latest is a prime example). After all, many folks - myself included - find that first film to be a perfect one. Despite covering The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise for this column, many horror fans would argue that the original 1974 film should have never become one.
